I attended an event this weekend. I attend yearly as its fascinating and great people watching.
It’s the Pinellas Pepper Fest hosted by the League of Fire.
Its 2 days of everything related to hot peppers. I watched a table of amateurs eat very large jalapenos. The rules: must chew and swallow, eating everything but the stem. Do not swallow it whole.
The winner: the one who eats the most.
The 2nd contest is the professionals. Interesting tip: They get paid. And….they are always accepting applications! A table full of the League of Fire were seating at the contestants’ table.
Warm-up round: jalapenos. Subsequent pepper rounds: habaneros, Thai chili, Twainese chili peppers, Scotch Bonnets, ghost peppers, dehydrated and hydrated scorpians, intermittent shots of Carolina Reapers and Hotter than L hot sauce.
Wow HOT stuff!
Then point of this is that these professionals worked their way up to honor of sitting at this table. They did prep work. They did not just show up! Most of the professionals started at the amateur table.
They assessed their skills (their body’s availability to handle the food).
They prepared for this job. One person ate a stick of butter because the saturated fats absorb the heat. One person eats a huge breakfast, smaller meals throughout the day and lots of milk.
They know the atmosphere of this job. The cold and heat effect all food in the body. Sometimes their prep works and sometimes it does not.
And the winner!
It’s a challenge. But sticking it out to the end could give you some cash.
